CORT Class: Ron Poppe will be putting on a CORT class June
16, 7:00 PM at the Steel Workers Hall at 180 Rock Island Road, East Wenatchee.
Goose banding: Dave
Volson reports banding will be June 23, 2010, at both the Rock Island Golf
Course and at Confluence State Park. We
will need 8-10 workers at each site. This year they will be trapping both
locations at the same time, banding at one, and then moving the banding
operation to the next. You can assume that we will be starting at or
before sunrise and working for roughly 4 hours.
Chelan/Douglas Land Trust: Neal Hedges is seeking a game camera to
borrow so vandals can be identified at some of their properties. If any one can help, call Neal at 509-667-9708.
Spring Clean Up: Meet at the park at Mission
and Crawford Streets at 8:00 AM. Bring
your own lunch, water, gloves tools and trucks. We will send crews to Blue
Grade, Beehive, Lilly, Clear and Black Lakes.
If enough people show up we will send them to Four Corners and Shaller
Rd. Contact Matt Gutzwiler, 663-1526 if
you can help. Disposal for junk and
metal has been arranged. This is the 12th
year WSA has sponsored this event. Come
out and support your club.
Chelan Butte Fences: Bill Stegeman
is still working on removal of fences from state wildlife lands on Chelan
Butte. Contact Bill at 663-7529 if you
can help. This project will be ongoing dependent on weather.
Colockum Projects: Ron Poppe has
a number of water and feeder projects in the Colockum Wildlife Area that need
to be finished. Contact Ron at 662-3957
for times, dates and projects.
River Cleanups: Cascadia Conservation District
is planning river clean up projects on the Entiat and Wenatchee Rivers in
August. They are also planning a
riparian planting project on the Entiat.
Contact Phylisha Owen at 664-9309.
Entiat Salmon: Chinook salmon fishery will be
open through June 30 on the Entiat River from the highway 97A bridge to 800
feet below the hatchery outlet. Daily
limit is two salmon over 12 inches.
Free Fishing Day: June 12-13
has been designated free fishing day by the WDFW. Citizens may fish without licenses, permits
or fees on open waters of the state. Contact WDFW for details at
www.wdfw.wa.gov.
Department Report: The Fish and
Wildlife Commission meeting scheduled for June 4-5 at Spokane has been changed
to a teleconference at the WDFW Region 1 office in Spokane and the Natural
Resources Building in Olympia on June 4th. Public input on non-agenda items
will be allowed at the beginning and end of the meeting. On the agenda will be proposed
wildlife-damage rules, available online at http://bit.ly/db1aCT,
and several land transactions.
Volunteering: Membership in the Wenatchee
Sportsmen’s Club is a voluntary act. The Mission Statement says we will
maintain and enhance habitat and preserve wildlife, which is important to us. We have been quite successful in funding our
mission through work of the Game Feed Committee members. We have had notable successes in support our
mission thanks to the volunteer efforts of members of WSA. We have been very successful on the local
level in hands on projects to support our mission. With success comes recognition, which we have
received from various sources. With
recognition come requests for assistance with projects from other groups and
agencies.
Due
to budgetary concerns Washington State has decided to reduce the ability of
state agencies to maintain lands and facilities that they havr been responsible
for in the past. Other organizations
with similar interests to ours in Washington are increasing their
activities. These lead to more requests
for project help from the Wenatchee Sportsmen’s Association. Already in 2010 we have logged over 2000
volunteer hours. Our core group of
workers is getting stretched pretty thin.
We have had to decline to be involved in some good projects because we
do not feel we could find the time from our volunteers. We need more hands on help. We all have family and career requirements
that limit our time to volunteer, but if we had more members participating we
could do more. We have a variety of projects
throughout the year. Just 10 hours per
member would generate 3000+ hours of progress.
Last Meeting: Remember that this is the last
meeting until September. We will have
projects continuing throughout the summer, so check the website for times and
dates, or call Ron Poppe or Bill Stegeman.
Keep track of your hours and mileage to turn in to Ron Poppe. Keep Club and Department time separate.
